Zachary Cole, 2011 Portland Youth of the Year!
17-year old Zachary is a true example of an extraordinary young man recognized by Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) for his sound character, leadership skills and willingness to give back to the community.
Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. As BGCA's premier youth recognition program, Youth of the Year recognizes outstanding contributions to a member's family, school, community and Boys & Girls Club, as well as overcoming personal challenges and obstacles. Youth of the Year encourages Club members to reach their full potential by achieving academic success, leading healthy lifestyles and contributing to their communities. Youth of the Year honorees are shining examples and living proof that great futures start at Boys & Girls Clubs.
A senior at the Renaissance Arts Academy on the John Marshall High School Campus, Zachary hopes to attend Portland State University in the fall where he aims to major in Marriage, Relationship and Family Counseling.
"Zachary exemplifies everything that we do at the Boys & Girls Clubs and the potential that each child can have if given the right guidance," said Lisabeth Marziello, Chief Executive Officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland. "As a young child going to a small school, I learned the importance of community. As I become more involved in the Club, it strengthens my sense of community and importance on family. It built a greater sense and value for standing up for one's convictions, standing up for one's neighbors and standing strong when others need you," commented Zachary.
