CLICK HERE FOR FACTS ABOUT DYSLEXIA
Research has shown that one out of five children nationwide is dyslexic. Dyslexia is a language learning difference characterized by a spatial, rather than linear, method of processing information. While linear thinkers learn best through a structured, two-dimensional approach involving repetition and memorization, spatial thinkers learn best through a three-dimensional multisensory approach that engages their visual, auditory and kinesthetic motor senses.
Because schools traditionally use a linear teaching methodology, dyslexic children are at high risk of being educationally left behind. They are often placed in Special Education classes, or accused of being lazy, stupid, or not working at their full potential. Research has shown, however, that individuals with dyslexia often exhibit extremely high IQs and a strong ability to think in a creative and innovative manner. Famous dyslexics include Albert Einstein, Charles Schwab, Winston Churchill, and Nelson Rockefeller.
Our Literacy Centers provide educational support for members who need it most and aim to increase literacy for all youth, particularly those with dyslexia. Through a multi-sensory teaching approach involving fun and engaging materials developed by the Slingerland Institute, kids are provided with the tools they need to achieve academic success.
Additional one-on-one assistance with homework, reading programs, small group reading lessons, and other educationally enriching activities are also available on a daily basis at literacy centers.
During Club operating hours, all members are welcome to join the literacy activities offered each day. Literacy Centers are currently located at the Meyer Club and the Regence Club, and will soon be open at all Club locations.
