Oregonian Features BGC Kids Cafe Program: "Bad child hunger season leads to worse years"
September 20, 2011- The summer was really hard. "They'd come in, and they hadn't had lunch or breakfast," explains Lisabeth Marziello, who oversees Boys and Girls Clubs in the metropolitan area. Without looking at the newspapers, you could tell it was a tough time; Portland families are scrambling to keep a roof over their heads, and "food is sometimes second or third on the list." Those three months without school lunches or breakfasts were a particularly hungry time. Three of Marziello's clubs in Southeast Portland offer Kids Cafes -- supported by the Oregon Food Bank, food-service companies such as Sysco and private fundraising -- and no restaurant in Portland has more demand for its tables. With the return of the school year, the flow is a little different, but it's hardly slowed. Read More.

Nike & Blazers 'Make It Better' at Annual Hoop Clinic
July 21st- 2011- The gym at the Wattles Boys & Girls club in southeast Portland is reminiscent of the old field houses built in the 1940's. The domed roof and exposed girders are all features typical of the era. Wattles predates the apartment complex that resides across the street, and is ancient compared to the green line MAX tracks laid a stone's throw away from the club. There have been updates and additions, but the gym, aside from a new coat of paint every few years, looks basically the same as it did when the facility was first opened in 1946. The kids come and go, but the gym has remained.
And though all of the kids do eventually go, some stick around for longer than others. Brandon and Bryan Gastelum-Plata are two of those kids (or, more accurately, young men) who have made the Wattles Boys & Girls Club their second home. For eight years they've been coming to the club, participating in events ranging from table games competitions to fundraisers for school supplies and Haitian earthquake relief. And on July 21, they participated in their sixth-straight Nike make it better Hoops Clinic, though this time around, they spent their time helping the next generation of kids at Wattles. Read More.
